about

These sound recordings were made in John Cage's Changing Installation at the Mattress Factory in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania from mid October 1991 through mid February 1992. These recordings were made without the consent of John Cage. A sound recording was made for every day that the installation was open to the public. The lengths of the sound recordings and the position of the sound recording device in the installation were determined in advance by Edgar Um Bucholtz using chance operations. A variety of models of audio cassette recorders were used. On two days, a video camera was used to make the audio recordings (with the camera lens cap left on.) For each day that a recording was made, a page from Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari's A Thousand Plateaus (translated to English by Brian Massumi) was chosen in advance using chance operations. The recording technician for that day was advised to read that page (and the pages that followed, if compelled) during the allotted recording time.

Additional recordings will be added to this page as the recordings are digitized.
